Self-Folding Thermo-Magnetically Responsive Soft Microgrippers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Hydrogels such as poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (pNIPAM-AAc) can be photopatterned to create a wide range of actuatable and self-folding microstructures. Mechanical motion is derived from the large and reversible swelling response of this cross-linked hydrogel in varying thermal or pH environments. This action is facilitated by their network structure and capacity for large strain. However, due to the low modulus of such hydrogels, they have limited gripping ability of relevance to surgical excision or robotic tasks such as pick-and-place. Using experiments and modeling, we design, fabricate, and characterize photopatterned, self-folding functional microgrippers that combine a swellable, photo-cross-linked pNIPAM-AAc soft-hydrogel with a nonswellable and stiff segmented polymer (polypropylene fumarate, PPF). We also show that we can embed iron oxide (Fe2O3) nanoparticles into the porous hydrogel layer, allowing the microgrippers to be responsive and remotely guided using magnetic fields. Using finite element models, we investigate the influence of the thickness and the modulus of both the hydrogel and stiff polymer layers on the self-folding characteristics of the microgrippers. Finally, we illustrate operation and functionality of these polymeric microgrippers for soft robotic and surgical applications.

Modelling of shape memory polymer sheets that self-fold in response to localized heating.
We report a nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) of the thermo-mechanical shrinking and self-folding behavior of pre-strained polystyrene polymer sheets. Self-folding is useful for actuation, packaging, and remote deployment of flat surfaces that convert to 3D objects in response to a stimulus such as heat. The proposed FEA model accounts for the viscoelastic recovery of pre-strained polysty...
متن کاملReversible Self-Actuated Thermo-Responsive Pore Membrane
Smart membranes, which can selectively control the transfer of light, air, humidity and temperature, are important to achieve indoor climate regulation. Even though reversible self-actuation of smart membranes is desirable in large-scale, reversible self-regulation remains challenging. Specifically, reversible 100% opening/closing of pore actuation showing accurate responsiveness, reproducibili...

Two novel thermo-responsive polymer brushes were prepared from L-alanine derivatives using the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) technique. The temperature-induced cell capture and release on both polymer brush modified substrates were further explored.

Concurrent hyperthermia and radiation therapy in treatment of cancer show a strong evidence of a synergistic enhancement. We designed a new self-regulating Thermo-Brachytherapy seed, which serves as a source of both radiation and heat for concurrent administration of brachytherapy and hyperthermia. The Thermo-Brachytherapy seed has a core of ferromagnetic material which produces heat when subje...
متن کاملTetherless thermobiochemically actuated microgrippers.
We demonstrate mass-producible, tetherless microgrippers that can be remotely triggered by temperature and chemicals under biologically relevant conditions. The microgrippers use a self-contained actuation response, obviating the need for external tethers in operation. The grippers can be actuated en masse, even while spatially separated. We used the microgrippers to perform diverse functions, ...
